Welcome to the first issue of I LIVE IN HELL! You may
be asking yourself why the hell anyone would write a
zine in 2015, in an age where so much information can
be found online. The answer is simple: we love the DIY
tradition of zines, and there’s fewer things we enjoy than
physically holding something counterculture related. In
this era, it’s become harder and harder to find zines and
papers that cover subjects too small for what the majority
of our media (and the internet) is covering.
We’ve also chosen to write I LIVE IN HELL because
as Floridians, we feel unjustly disregarded by the rest of
America and the world. Floridians and the arts that they
create are the butt of many jokes. Many up and coming or
established bands don’t tour through here, and most of the
bands from Florida rarely make a mark outside of here. We
would like to bring to light the good things about Florida
and Floridian culture so that others within and without
can see the fruits of our labor. At the same time, we would
like to show to Floridians the great work that others are
doing outside of Florida.
To do this, we’ve got some general rules that we will
always follow. First, we hope to not just cover music
(although music will be our biggest focus), but all sorts
of art. Second, because everybody can find out about the
art that people make when they have the endorsement
of bigger companies, so we are going to shy away from
the dregs of pop culture such as mainstream movies and
radio-friendly pop. Nothing from the bigger indies either –
they get enough attention from everyone else anyway! We
want to help out the smaller artists. Third, we will have
regular columns about a wide variety of topics, features
about different bands and artists, and reviews. These are
largely generated by our editors and our contributors.
We’re adding a bit of local flair by focusing on at least one
local artist per issue though, and we will always have a
Tallahassee show calendar in our zine.
Speaking of which, if you want to be a contributor, you
are more than welcome to do so! We want to be largely
driven by a collaborative spirit, and we do not want to
turn people away. We, the
editors, will publish things
that we agree with, as long
as it does not cross certain
boundaries (overt racism/
homophobia/sexism, etc.
will not be published. Nazi
punks fuck off) and as long
as it has not been featured
in any other publication.
